Behind the scenes at The InterContinental Sydney shoot

Have you ever wondered what goes on behind the scenes at a Modern Wedding shoot to make our brides look stunning (not that they aren't already) and the dresses look amazing? Here is a little snapshot of an upcoming shoot for issue 48 of Modern Wedding due to hit the stands September 2010.

DIY Hair

If you are just engaged or have been engaged for a while, there is undoubtedly dozens of celebrations coming up where you have to be the belle of the ball and really shine. We have asked the experts at The Art of Hair to give us a few styling tips on how to do an impressive hairstyle without spending hundreds at the hairdressers. With the 'easy' steps you can create this stunning Grecian Goddess look.

Before

Step 1: Section hair in a curve shape from the corner of eyebrow down side of head and into the nape. Repeat on opposite side.

Step 2: Using a strong gel, direct side sections up towards the crown holding hair very tight.

Step 3: Place a small elastic band on the section making sure the band is positioned just behind the ear. Repeat on other side.

Step 4: Place hot rollers through the middle section. Wind rollers back of base to avoid root lift.

Step 5: Section hair behind the crown.

Step 6: Pin a crescent-shaped padding firmly along the section of hair. Tuck ends under if too wide.

Step 7: Smooth front section of hair over padding. Gently backcomb to hold hair together if slippery.

Step 8: Pin front section of hair in front of padding and drape remaining front section over padding and down back of head.

Step 9: Braid side sections out 5cm and secure with elastic bands.

Step 10: Cross each braid to opposite side of head along front of padding. Pin firmly under padding to secure and conceal elastic bands.

Rainy day photo session

Congratulations to Andrew for such a beautiful photo shoot despite a hail storm they had to endure right in the middle of proceedings.
Alison & Rodney held their ceremony at Green Point on Brighton Beach. The hail storm washed out the photo session, but they still had a great photo shoot even with the rain. The photos speak for themselves!

Amazing proposal at the zoo

What a stunning weekend we have just had, you could even say it was perfect. Well I know one couple who would certainly think so, a couple I came across at Taronga Zoo this weekend.
The sun was shining and there were over a hundred people seated in the amphitheater overlooking the beautiful Sydney harbour, oo-ing and ah-ing over the zoo's bird show. It was midday and the show was coming to an end - there was one last trick up the clever Pink Galah's feathered sleeve - 'the gold coin trick.' In this trick Jasper, the Galah, flies over to a volunteer, who is holding up a gold coin; he takes the coin from their hand and flies down to the keeper with it. The honest Galah then takes it back to the volunteer and drops it in his/her hand.
Well this Saturday the trick was a little different - it all started as usual.... A female audience member was picked to hold up a coin. Jasper flew to her, took the coin and flew it to the show's presenter. The presenter then put the coin in her pocket joking about keeping it, after some more teasing she gave Jasper the coin to return. The chosen volunteer held out her hand for the coin... however what was dropped in her hand was much more valuable.- to her surprise it was a diamond engagement ring.

A microphone was handed to the gentleman standing next to the shocked and excited girl, as he got down on one knee and proposed. The family were all hugging and squealing with excitement as the rest of the audience looked on in amazement, slowly working out what has just occurred.
Suddenly two-dozen white doves flew out of the trees and circled above the audience and newly engaged couple as the song 'The Chapel of Love' was played.
It was a truly moving moment and I feel honoured to have witnessed this fantastic proposal. Oh... and of course she said yes!

Bridezilla to top all bridezillas

Bridezilla-dom has become a common phenomenon. If you are one of the very few who haven't heard of it here is a simple explanation: Whilst the newly engaged female is under pre-wedding planning pressure she turns into a perfectionist with mood swings, unreasonable demands and quite simply un-pleasant. Some have called her a 'monster.'
The UK posses the worst of of these monsters. Her name is Chantel and she is proud to be a 'tough bridezilla'.

Chantel put her bridesmaids on a strict diet before her big day, weighed and measured them every two weeks and even sent them to boot camp to tone up.

The shameless 24-year-old says: "I am very proud to be the UK's worst Bridezilla. To be the perfect Bridezilla you need to be ruthless, business-like and never ever take 'No' for an answer. I am a perfectionist and so everything and everyone had to measure up - literally.
"My guests had to be the right size, shape and look good enough to be invited to my perfect day.
"People may think my demands were over the top but I couldn't care less."
Chantel became the ultimate bride from hell when Quentin proposed last year.
"The second I got to a computer, I sent an email to my two bridesmaids asking for them to send me a full-length photograph of themselves. I hadn't seen them for years, as they live abroad, so I needed to see what their figures were like and if they would suit my wedding party."
Chantel set about making a spreadsheet of their weights and measurements, giving them a strict diet to follow until her big day.
She says: "Their dresses were being made in London, and neither of them was available for fittings. So every fortnight I insisted they sent me their weights, measurements and a full-length photo so I could see their progress.
"They both needed to shift a few pounds so I made them go on a starch-free diet and sent them a spreadsheet of foods they could eat, with calorie listings. I stuck to the same diet. It only seemed fair I should do it if I was forcing them to."
Chantel, from Chiswick, West London, warned her bridesmaids that if they did not tone up and drop a dress size, they would be dropped from the wedding.
She says: "There was no way I was going to have a chubby bridesmaid ruin my photographs. I was working too hard to make everything perfect to allow someone else's greed or laziness ruin my day. So just in case my bridesmaids weren't sticking to their diets, I also paid for them to exercise daily with a boot camp instructor.


"I ordered all the men in the wedding party to go on a beer-free diet. Beer bellies were not going to feature in my wedding pictures."
In fact, no one escaped Chantel's outrageous demands - she gave her approval to the outfit of every guest at the wedding and made them have professional hair and make-up. Chantel says: "I set a strict dress code for them and demanded to see their outfits before the day. Aunts and cousins were instructed to arrive without make-up. I hired make-up artists and hairdressers to see to them."
Not only did Chantel control all aspects of the wedding, she also made sure the pre-wedding fun was under her watchful eye. She says: "I decided Quentin and I would have joint stag and hen parties in London, as I didn't trust girls not to flirt with my man. I wanted to see what he and his friends were up to, so I knew there'd be no funny business."
She wrote the vows for herself and her husband-to-be, and re-wrote Quentin's wedding speech because she did not like his first draft. She says: "It simply wasn't romantic or gushing enough. So I made it all about me.
"When I look at photographs of our wedding day, I am so pleased I spent so long controlling everything. Some of my friends were so impressed with my tough Bridezilla attitude that they've asked me for help on planning their weddings."
Chantel believes that every girl who wants the perfect wedding has to be the same.
She says: "In every bride-to-be, there is a Bridezilla waiting to come out. If you embrace it, you are guaranteed to have the most wonderful, well-planned day of your dreams."


Quentin says: "I love my wife dearly and knew our wedding day was going to be all about her. I did everything I could to make it extra special, even though I didn't agree with the joint stag party and her writing my speech. "But it made her happy and stopped any tears and tantrums - that's all that counts."

The new Modern Wedding magazine is on it's way to the news stands and will arrive on Wednesday! I have managed to grab a few sneak peak pages from the girls in design to show you!

You will be given a brief of what to make, a time frame and a budget. Using your creativity, personality and your own resources you’ll create a product that is truly unique.
