Faking It - A Thousand Lashes M'Lady

A few years ago I became obsessed with a 9 year old boy. I should clarify this statement in case you call child services. I became obsessed with his eyelashes. They were long, gently curvy and reached to the heavens it seemed. As someone that has short and striaght lashes it seemed wholly unfair that eyelashes that beautiful should be given to someone who thought they were a “stupid nuisance”. I wanted to plead “Give them to meeeee.”

I've done all sorts of things to my lashes. Several years ago I had them permed which involved toothpicks and a lot of pain and what it seemed like a slight risk of going blind. Not only did I do this once, but I did it several times until the skin on my eyelid doth protested and developed a case of dermatitis. So I went the other route, I dotted on an eyelash extender which was subsequently banned and had to be reformulated because of some reason I was too scared to look into.

I came across Lady Lash on twitter (@LadyLashAust) as she had just started following us at Modern Wedding and made an appointment to see Charlotte in Newtown (there is also a Lady Lash in Maroubra too). I had no idea what to expect from the process but I knew from reading the website that the lashes last for about 3-4 weeks depending on how much care you take with them. It costs between $120-$140 and takes about 1.5 hours. If you like the look (and I get the sense that it is highly addictive), you can get infills for around $50-$60 depending on the time that has elapsed between the applications with three to three and a half weeks being the ideal time for infills.

We arrived at the stairs of the Newtown location and Charlotte who herself appears to have the lashes (either that or she happens to have fabulously natural inhuman lashes), shows me to the pink blanket lined bed where I will lie for the next one and a half hours. She places some pads and tape on the lower eyelashes (faux lashes are only applied to the top lashes) in order to avoid the tragic happening-the lower eyelashes sticking to the glue on the top eyelashes and not being able to open your eyes-ouch! How many lashes are placed depends on how many natural eyelashes you have although it can range to 45 to 60 for a bridal set. She also tapes the eyelid so that she can get an angle for the tweezers and the eyelashes.

It is early in the morning and I almost fall asleep. It's not painful, there are no toothpicks or pin pricks although the pads can cause a slight discomfort (and if they hurt you can always ask her to move them down a bit further). It does take the full one and a half hours and when she finished the last lash it was all I could do to contain myself and say “May I pleeease have a mirror?”

The verdict? I loved it! I finally have those eyelashes that I coveted from that boy. I don't have to mascara which saves about 5 minutes when getting ready for me. And yes it is an addiction, no doubt about it. And it's also a great idea for a hen's party for that final touch of pretty before the big day-they don't have to get the full set done, they can also do a smaller set just at the ends of the eyes.
