“It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife.”
Every year as the weather gets warmer I am compelled to revisit my battered old copy of Pride & Prejudice. Romance, regency, rumours and revelations… Austen’s themes are still rousing, and the charming pastoral grandeur of the Victorian era is a gorgeous way to inspire your wedding theme.
Think lace and pearls, empire line gowns, soft pastels and bespoke invitations & place cards. Personalise each bridesmaid's outfit, add an air of feminine mystery with a handheld fan and let your imagination run wild when it comes to table centres and flowers: simple bunches of lavender or lilacs bound with twine have a lovely rural style and silver or gold gilded frames and velvet chairs can add a sense of luxury. Garlands of roses and ivy will give your venue a Victorian edge, as will adding gorgeous tea sets and beautiful silverware. You can even encourage your guests to read up by placing a stack of your favourite hardcover copies of Jane Austen novels in the centre of the table!

As for your man... it would be nice to think we could get him into the fancy top hat and tails dictated by Victorian ball etiquette, but I think we'd all happily settle for the rougher black work pants, untucked white shirt and mussed hair of Darcy's riding clothes.

This was one of my favourite books when I was a teenager. Thankyou for helping me "find" it again for inspiration!
ReplyDeleteCute idea! Must admit, was never a fan myself in High School - but do love an understated theme in a wedding :) Very elegant
